Split tails are due to bacterial erosion of the delicate tissue between the fin rays. The cause is high organic levels in the tank. The cure is to reduce the bacterial density in the tank.

  • feed a better quality food more sparingly,
  • keep filters and tank cleaner,
  • reduce organics in the tank through water changes

Treating with medications does not work well. The goal is to reduce the bacterial count in the tank.
