Guppy Color Bank
Edition 2.3, 344 pages, hardcover, full color
This is the second edition of the largest collection of guppy strains ever published: 155 strains! Each entry is illustrated with high quality photos. Entries include other names, history, description, genetics and "breeders comments." The Color Bank is tagged with the categories guppies fall into, and the index can be used to find guppies that fall into that category (such as "Pink" mutation). The genetic makeup of many strains are detailed, making the book a kind of guppy design cookbook. The Notes section is cross-referenced to guppies in the Color Bank, expanding on their colors and genetics. A gene table lists all the known guppy genes and provides references so that the mutation can be explored in depth with examples from the Color Bank. A "Common Genetic Terms" section is cross-referenced to the strains in the Bank, providing short articles on important genetic concepts used throughout the Bank.A chapter on the Guppy Color System helps you understand the three-dimensional nature of guppy color cells. A chapter on basic guppy genetics lays the groundwork for understanding the genetics sections of entries.

Reviews
From the review in the Scientific Journal AACL. This reviewed the previous version (2.1). The book has since increased in size and number of strains covered.
Shaddock P., 2009 The See-thru guppy: a transparent fish model. AACL Bioflux 2(2):137-145. Editorial news: Shaddockâs Guppy Color Bank
The second edition of Guppy Color Bank (Shaddok 2009a) is the most comprehensive guide to guppy strains of the World. A total number of 133 guppy strains are phenotypically and genotypically described by Philip Shaddock in as much as 334 pages. The author combines information from scientific literature with the hobby experiences and with photography, so that Guppy Color Bank is welcome to all those interested in poeciliids. Moreover, observations related to color genes, their complex interaction, and cellular expression in different circumstances are useful information to all the scientists involved in animal biology or teaching. The book is not a simple compilation from literature; it is plenty of original observations and ingenious breeding projects by which the author creates new and extraordinay strains. Such an excellent result is the so called See Thru Guppy, the first transparent guppy in history (see also Shaddock 2009b for details). We warmly recommend the book to all the guppy fanciers. |
